Can I, as an atheist, cherry pick the bits I like, and ignore the rest?
Because some Christians cherry pick parts of the Bible they like, and ignore what they don't?
I agree with Buddy all the way !
God bless.
Of course.
I really like when Christians and Muslims only choose statements from their holy books that are in favor of tolerance and treating other people well. Isn't that what books should be all about? Not believing in every word without question but taking the good ideas and rejecting the bad? Isn't that what free expression all about?
No amount of cherry picking will make the supernatural exist. Facts aren't subjective. Some people claim to follow every part of the Bible (fundamentalists) yet even they cherry pick. Those people are hypocrites.
But for honest readers it always make sense to appraise every idea on its merits, not to accept the whole bag because of some propaganda based on blind faith. Do I have to agree with everything Nietzsche says? Of course not. I take only what I can use and I am not a hypocrite for doing so, even if I say that Nietzsche is a great philosopher. The Bible may be the same way to some people.
"Treat others as you would want to be treated" for instance is sound advice in any society, religion or not. There are other passages that are wholly contemptible and in favor of violence. By all means, ignore those.Because some Christians cherry pick parts of the Bible they like, and ignore what they don't?
It's not a good idea for ANYONE to "cherry pick" certain parts of the Bible for their own use, or comfort.
The entire Bible, used in PROPER context, is an instruction manual on how to live a morally upright life, in obedience to the Heavenly Father.
As human children are instructed to obey their parents...so are the Children of God given instruction on how to obey Him.
You can cherry pick all you want, no point waiting around for someone else to do it first.
But not all Christians do that, some of us try to understand the whole book but it's not all that easy. In fact as with most things it is much easier to criticize Gods word than to take the time to learn about it.
God gave us His written Word so that we have a fair chance to get right with Him. If you chose to waste that opportunity you are only hurting yourself, and I can promise you that one day you will regret it.
God Bless, I pray God will give you plenty of fruit from the little bit of cherries you chose to pick.%26lt;%26gt;%26lt; Because some Christians cherry pick parts of the Bible they like, and ignore what they don't?
Sure, have at it...why do atheists pick the worst examples of christianity to make fun of God?
And a better question, why do you put any faith (excuse the use of that word) in people, who, as you know are as fallible and imperfect as yourselves? Way to pick easy targets. Are you that intellectually weak?
That's like pointing out the slowest runner and saying how the team has no one who's fast.
Strawman much?
To be honest with you, you can do whatever you want. The bottom line is no one is going to live for you or die for you. I don't believe in Jesus but if i did where is it written that he says you have to be a christian to be saved by his sacrifice. Doesn't john 3:16 say he was sent to save the whole world not just the christians of the world? If he is universal and all powerful like they say he is than why do the christians limit him?
You failto understand.
We do not cherry pick, if any do it is a denominational thing, and linked at times to the version of the bible we are using.
on the whole i is wrong for you to say that'Christians' chery pick.
We do not. Some who call themselves christians are so wicked even you would not belive it.
jesus saves... thats all i'm helping you with.
Blessings.
(this place is clean.)
You can do what you like but I will advise you dare not die without Jesus Christ.
Here are a few cherries I suggest you pick immediately before it's too late for you!
"For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
"But God comendeth his love for us in this; while we were yet sinners; Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die; after that comes judgment." Hebrews 9:27
"He who believes is not condemned; he who believes not is condemned already because he has not believed in the one and only begotten Son of God." John 3:18 (KJV)
Jesus saith unto him,"I am the way and the truth and the life; no man commeth to the Father but by me." John 14:6
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.....Acts 16:23
"But to him that worketh not but believeth on him; that justifieth the ungodly; his faith is counted for righteousness." Romans 4:5
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son; that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish but have everlasting life." John 3"16
This has been a problem for a while with many professing Christians, which are suppose to represent Christ, yet because of our poor representation, that is why His Name is blasphemed among the nations.
you have a good point. but the fact is that christians should not cherry pick. neither should you. all or nothing. and for me it's all of God's word. also you must take note of proper observation and application.
yes of course as long as you dont copy the jehovahs witnesses and physically edit it to your interests it says not to do that in the bible but they do
Who cares? Btw, every book ever written contains some irrelevant info, the Bible is no different.
True Christians believe in the whole Bible. We often quote various scriptures to allude to different situations.
Why of course you 'can'. Do not be deceived though, you will be held accountable for abusing you're conscience.
You are free to do what ever you like.
Pray the Rosary and receive the Sacraments for the glory of Christ the King
Yes, of course, but the Christians will still be unable to recognize that they're doing the same.
i dont pick the parts of the bible i like i want to follow all the bible
Not only that, you can state that you now ARE a Christian, and be just as right as they are.
YEah! Time to leave the gays and start persecuting the mixed-fabric wearers!
precisely why i left christianity.
Christians don't cherry pick.
The New Covenatnt was prophesied in the Old Covenant times. Jesus brought in the New Covenant. The church has never been under the old one.
Mat 26:28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Jer 31:31-34 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant ... this shall be the covenant that I will make ...I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.... And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Under the New Covenant we recieve the Spirit as the prophet Joel also prophesied would happen in th New Covenant. (Joel 2:27-32)
Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
The ceremonial law was not carried over into the New Covenant. Ceremonial law was a shadow pointing towards the coming of Christ. Christ, the reality of the shadow, has come.
Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Col 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
Col 2:21 (Touch not; taste not; handle not;
Mat 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
1) The ceremonial law pointed to Christ and is fulfilled in him.
2) Jesus perfectly obeyed the Law.
3) Jesus paid our penalty for breaking the Law.
The Law could not give us the strength to live right but the Spirit that we receive in the New Covenant can.
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
The moral law as you see is still in effect. The requirements of the moral law are righteous.
Sure why not, the world is full of hypocrites, I think we have room for one more, why don't you come join us?
No Christian can do that and be true to Christianity...
You are free to do as you so choose.
How are you so naive to not realize that you do?
I think we all do that, it's called being human.
NO, We have to live according to God's word. In all our ways we must acknowledge God.
Why bother ?
